Mr. Krippet is the most industrious, well-mannered, and well-respected member of the meadow. Known far and wide for his magnificent tenor voice and his skill as a shoemaker for the ants, he has spent the warm months singing, working, and making friends among the meadow's chirping, squawking, climbing, and crawling creatures. But winter is coming — and Mr. Krippet has nowhere to live and nothing stored away to eat.

At the far edge of the meadow sits the baker's cozy cottage, and it looks like just the shelter Mr. Krippet needs. But will he make the baker's acquaintance — and earn a place by the fire — before the first snow falls?

Written by veteran educator Emma L. Sembly and brought to life through Lesley Scoble's charming illustrations, Mr. Krippet is a gentle, richly imagined tale about dedication, preparation, and friendship. Set against the changing seasons of a pristine meadow, the story weaves together the thrill of nature with the everyday rhythms of work and community — teaching children about planning ahead, delayed gratification, kindness, and politeness without ever feeling like a lesson.
Drawing on her extensive experience as a teacher, mother, grandmother, and aunt, Sembly builds a world where readers absorb the story's message about hard work, generosity, and shared humanity almost without realizing they've been taught anything at all. Enriched vocabulary, vivid sensory imagery, and a warmly rhythmic reading voice make this a favorite for reading aloud at bedtime, in classrooms, and in libraries — and a natural companion to classic fable-and-fall stories about industriousness and community.

With a foreword by celebrated poet Zaneta V. Johns, Mr. Krippet invites children of all ages — and the grown-ups who read to them — to leap into the meadow with all their senses. Whether shared as a bedtime story, a classroom read-aloud, or a quiet corner adventure, this is a book about finding courage in new experiences, home in unexpected places, and magic in the small creatures of everyday life.
